mica is a series of silicate minerals of varying chemical composition but with similar physical properties. mica may have well-defined cleavage and split into very thin sheets.

Description

A super versatile and common mineral powder that comes in different particle sizes. It is a multi-tasker used to improve skin feel, increase product slip, give the product light-reflecting properties, enhance skin adhesion or serve as an anti-caking agent.

It is also the most commonly used "base" material for layered composite pigments such as pearl-effect pigments. In this case, mica is coated with one or more metal oxides (most commonly titanium dioxide) to achieve pearl effect via the physical phenomenon known as interference.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mica

What does mica do in skincare and makeup?
Mica is used mainly as a colorant and a light-reflecting ingredient. It gives products a shimmery, pearly, or luminous finish without providing meaningful skincare benefits. In makeup, it can also improve slip and help powders look smoother on the skin.
Is mica safe for skin?
Mica is generally considered safe for use on skin in cosmetics. It is an inert mineral, so it usually does not do much beyond adding visual effect and texture. Very sensitive skin may still react to the full product formula, but mica itself is not a common irritant.
Can mica powder be used directly on the skin?
Cosmetic-grade mica can be used in products designed for skin, but it should not be applied loosely in a way that can be inhaled or get into the eyes. It is best used mixed into makeup, lotions, or other formulated products rather than as a dry loose powder on its own. Non-cosmetic mica may contain impurities and should not be used on skin.
What are the benefits of mica in makeup products?
Mica helps create shimmer, sparkle, and a soft-focus effect in makeup. It can make powders, blushes, eyeshadows, and highlighters look brighter and more evenly distributed. It can also improve the feel of pressed and loose powders by making them smoother and less chalky.
Is mica natural, and does that make it better?
Mica is a naturally occurring mineral, but natural does not automatically mean safer or better. In cosmetics, the quality depends on how well it is purified and processed, and whether it is cosmetic grade. Its main role is visual and textural, not skin treatment.
