Descriptif
Cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that shows up in cosmetics mostly as a hair and skin-supporting ingredient. It’s a building block of proteins like keratin, which is a major part of hair, nails, and the outer layers of skin. In formulas, cysteine is often used to help condition, strengthen, and support the look and feel of hair, especially in products aimed at damaged or chemically treated strands.
For hair, cysteine can help improve softness, manageability, and the appearance of resilience by supporting the protein structure that gives hair its shape. In skin care, it’s less of a headline ingredient but may be included for its antioxidant-related role and general support of skin conditioning. People with dry, brittle, color-treated, or heat-styled hair may benefit most from cysteine-containing products.
Caveat: cysteine is usually a supporting ingredient rather than a star active, so results depend heavily on the full formula. It’s generally well tolerated in cosmetics, but as with any ingredient, individual sensitivity can happen. If you have a very reactive scalp or skin, patch testing a new product is a sensible move.
