Undecane is a lightweight, plant-derived hydrocarbon often used in cosmetics as a solvent, emollient, and texture booster. It belongs to the same family as other “-ane” ingredients and is valued for its very low viscosity and quick-drying feel. In formulas, it helps spread products more evenly, improves slip, and can make creams, serums, and makeup feel less greasy or heavy on the skin.
For skin, undecane mainly contributes a smooth, silky finish rather than delivering a direct treatment benefit. It can help oily or combination skin types enjoy richer formulas without the usual sticky afterfeel, and it’s also useful in long-wear makeup and sunscreens where a lighter touch matters. In hair products, it may improve spreadability and leave hair feeling softer and less coated.
Caveat: undecane is generally included for sensory and formulation benefits, not as an active skincare ingredient.
