Gellan Gum is a plant-derived polysaccharide used in skincare and haircare mainly as a thickener, stabilizer, and texture enhancer. It’s made through fermentation and helps formulas feel smoother, more elegant, and less watery. In a product, it can also support even dispersion of ingredients and improve the way gels, serums, and lightweight lotions spread on skin or hair.
For skin, gellan gum doesn’t act like an active treatment ingredient, but it can make a formula more comfortable and give it a fresh, cushiony slip. In hair products, it may help create a light coating that improves feel and manageability without adding much weight. People who like gel textures, minimalist formulas, or lightweight moisturizers often appreciate it.
Caveat: gellan gum is generally used at low levels and is usually well tolerated, but as with any ingredient, individual sensitivity is possible. It’s best thought of as a formula helper rather than a skin-transforming star.
